{Is this right/is it even the legal? This part is an opinion of an old curmudgeon underlined by my concern for my privacy and my freedom.
first big brother is watching now Facebook/I don’t think a social Media like Facebook Has the legal right To require Anyone Social Security Number.Let’s face it. Were not buying a home,Applying for loan, No!! If they do this, if they require me to login with my social security number, I am out of here.}
PALO ALTO, California (IW) – Facebook will roll out a new member login format come April 1. It will require you to enter a social security number. Facebook claims the new procedure is designed to combat spam. From Facebook’s media relations department comes the following:
The new member log in format will be both safe and efficient for our users who fear having their Facebook identity stolen. The requirement for users to enter their social security numbers during log in, will completely take away the element of spam from unauthorized access. With cooperation from the United States government, we have compiled a database to verify that each person’s social security is accurate. Also, the last four digits of each users social will be displayed in their info section of their profile. Further upgrades to security are currently being planned, and will be announced as more information is given. (Emphasis added.)
In other words, under the pretense of saving you from annoying spammers, Facebook is teaming up with the federal government in an effort to get you acclimated to the idea of entering personal information before you will be allowed to use the internet. It will also streamline Facebook’s effort to track your online behavior, although it really does not need this data to do it (instead, it simply places a cookie on your computer).
Facebook said it corrected the tracking cookie issue, but a month later it was discovered that the “datr” cookie, which can be used to track users, was being sent to third-party websites with the Facebook plugin.
“Facebook has been accused of this nefarious activity many times before,” writes Chris Gabbard. He notes a number of lawsuits filed against the social network behemoth in Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and California, all claiming Facebook violates the Federal Wiretap Act.
Then it turned out Google was doing the same thing to Safari users in order to track their comings and goings. No sooner did this blow over it was revealed Facebook collaborated with the feds to spy on its phone users’ text messages.
It was reported back in 2010 that the government was using the popular network as a surveillance platform and in September of 2011 experts revealed that Google, Facebook and Twitter “are increasingly co-opted for surveillance work as the information they gather proves irresistible to law enforcement agencies,” according to Reuters.
Both Facebook and Google have changed their privacy policies to allow the companies to collect even more of your personal data and share it with “third parties” like the government and large corporations. Google’s new policy is especially egregious – it will now keep records on Google Maps search results, and combine Google+ and Gmail searches, records, and uploaded information, and more.
In December, open source guru Richard Stallman explained that “Facebook does massive surveillance.” Stallman’s observation follows that of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who characterized Facebook as “the most appalling spying machine that has ever been invented.”
Facebook “is not your friend,” Stallman said in January. “It is collecting data on you. The surveillance by Facebook is bigger than what you probably think. Don’t ever use the like button in FB as it immediately transfers information on you to someone,” Stallman said.
In 2009, the Electronic Frontier Foundation sued the CIA, the US Department of Defense, Department of Justice and three other government agencies for refusing to release information on how they use social networks as a surveillance tool.
It is now common knowledge that Facebook is a product of the CIA and the Department of Defense. The fact is so well-known it became the subject of a satire piece posted by The Onion. Google is linked to the CIA and the NSA and provides the agencies with sophisticated search technology. It also designed China’s Great Firewall of censorship.
If you’ll give up your social security number in order to see the newsfeeds of your friends, will you eventually consent to a fingerprint or retina scan before government gatekeepers allow you the privilege of using the internet?
